My fundamental approach: Each ethnic, religious etc. group should be able to get the right of self-determination in their territory (if they can prove very strong ties to this territory, stronger than anybody else). This means - if South Ossetia declares independence from Georgia, Georgian villages may declare independence from South Ossetia. ...provided that this does not limit freedoms of other people - so that Latvians could settle in Abrene where themselves or their fathers lived, so that Serbs could visit their historical sites in Kosovo, so that Russians could still use the oil hub in Chechnya, so that Georgian villages in South Ossetia could speak Georgian. However, such approach may not automatically mean establishing and independent country, sometimes it may be a broad autonomy. If all countries in the world observe these fundamental principles - there would be conflicts only about issues like - how much of the revenue from Russian oil hub should Chechens get, what degree of autonomy is sufficient, etc. But most politicians of the world don't think fundamentally, they just saying "territorial integrity" or just the opposite "total independence from Georgia". hub in the oil if they want it, provided they do not ruin the freedom of other ethnic groups to move across

cirks Abhāzijā arī bija ļoti mazs vietējo procents - ja jau somi karēļiem piepalīdzētu ar tankiem un aviāciju, tā jau vairs nebūtu problēma... ;) Bet ja nopietni ir diezgan daudz citu iespēju lai krievvalodīga Karēlija kļūtu par somiski runājošu. Krievi paši izceļoja uz Somiju un mācījās vietējo valodu, tā ka var gadīties, ka cilvēkiem sagribas nomainīt valsti vai valsts iekārtu dēļ ekonomiskajiem apsvērumiem - diemžēl Latvija šajā jautājumā nav diez ko drošās pozīcijās... P.S. Johaidi - Pouls Globs nav latvietis un blogā neizmanto tulka pakalpojumus. Un šie ārzemju autori ir tāpēc, ka kaut kad pasen Dienai bija projekts kā kļūt par nopietnu analītisku laikrakstu...

To be honest, independence of North-West Russia is a bit of fantasy genre :)) ... didn't even know such ideas exist. Actually islami-nation's independence movements seems more likely to be taken into account - like Tatarstan, Bashkiria, Caucasus etc. Maybe one day it could be Siberia ...
