Taking into account that the wind speed is increasing in Liepaja tonight, the decision to cancel the fireworks of the New Year was taken in consultation with specialists and taking care of the safety of the population.
According to the information provided by the State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center of Latvia, the wind in Liepaja tonight reaches the speed at which fireworks may not be performed. The law requires that the use of pyrotechnic articles is not permitted if the wind speed exceeds nine meters per second.
Ventspils can also cancel fireworks, but the final decision will be taken shortly after midnight, taking into account the weather conditions.
It has already been reported that a storm in the Baltic Sea was forecasted on the evening of January 1 and January 2.
